These vocabulary lists are about Japanese compound verbs. When you learn Japanese you would see a lot of verbs like “i” verbs or “u” verbs, they are basic, but if you read more Japanese materials there would be a lot of compound verbs which look like “光り輝く”，”投げ入れる” and “書き上げる”.

Learning these basic compound verbs has been crucial for me. Over the past few years, I struggled to find good dictionaries for them. However, last July, I stumbled upon a really old book edited by Chinese language professors, which has been a lifesaver. Nowadays, it’s hard to find such resources online. So, I typed them all into Word and now I’m sharing them here with you. As you go through these lists, you’ll notice they’re mostly in Japanese, with a few English explanations that I’ve tweaked to make them easier to understand.

日本語には「光り輝く，投げ入れる，書き上げる」のように，２つの動詞が連接した複合動詞が豊富に見られます。また，「食べてみる，仕舞っておく」のように前の動詞に「テ」が付いた表現も日常的に使われます。世界的に見ると，このような２動詞の連結表現は東アジアから南アジア，そして中央アジアの一部にかけての地域に広く分布していますが，多くの言語はテ形に当たる接続動詞を使っています。前の動詞が連用形に相当する「動詞＋動詞型」の複合動詞は，東アジアに限られるようで，中でも日本語の複合動詞は数の多さと表現力の多様性において群を抜いています。そのため，言語の専門家にとっては興味深い分析対象であるとともに，日本語を学ぼうとする外国人にとっては手強い学習テーマでもあります。
